Response to Literature Unit
Begins - October 20 through November 13 & 14
Lesson 1 - Pre-reading activity / "In Memory of Millions" Students need parent permission to view this video. Class discussion will follow video and end with students completing a Ticket out the Door.
Lesson 2 - Journal Entry Students will write a journal entry for their notebook using the knowledge and understanding they have gained from watching the video in their last class.
Lesson 3 - "Suzy and Leah" Students will read together the short story titled "Suzy and Leah" written by Jane Yolen. After a class discussion of the story, students will take a fifteen question, open-book multiple choice quiz on the story.
Lesson 4 - Character Analysis Students will write a paper analyzing the character of either Suzy or Leah. The student must provide textual evidence from the story to support the inferences they make in their analysis. He or she must also maintain a working portfolio with proof of his or her use of the steps found in the Writing Process. The Working Portfolio with this proof plus a hand written copy done in blue or black ink is due on November 13 or 14.
I am looking forward to working with your students during the 2008 - 2009 school year. Seventh Grade is a very busy year for middle school students. You will be amazed at the many changes and increasing maturity you will observe in your students. Seventh Grade Language Arts concentrates on student writing. Each student maintains a portfolio of compositions which he or she will bring home at the end of the year. Students will also read a wide variety of materials.
