Dec.14-22--Language Arts

For the rest of this week and next we will focus our writing on Compare/Contrast topics. The students have selected topics from a long list suggested by the teacher and are going to the media center to research them. Following a graphic organizer they will complete identifying the similarities and differences between the 2 subjects and go on to write a 1 page essay.

In grammar we are identifying subordinating conjunctions and how they introduce dependent clauses.In the student's writing complex sentences must alternate with simple and compound, in order for their papers to be interesting.

Our final DGP test over weeks 10,11,and 12 will be on Dec.21st and 22nd. Also, the annual Daniell Spelling Bee will be held in Mrs.Sanders's room on Dec.20th---hopefully, a 6th grader will win over the 7th and 8th students!!

Please encourage your child to keep track of their Language Arts Binder and agenda. The volume of work has picked up and we need the students to maintain their responsibility to their own education.!

Dec.5-9 Language Arts

This week the students will be taking the county Check-point test on the new I-Respond system.This will be given on Wednesday/Thursday (Block Days) in order that they have ample time for this 2-part test. The information covered is what has been taught (and hopefully learned!) from August through November.

Spelling Words were given out last week and the test is this Friday. Students also have 3 tasks to complete with the words---ABC order, write 10 sentences combining 10 spelling words with a subordinating conjunction, and dictionary practice. This is all due by Dec. 9th.

Our next writing is Compare-contrast--the students will be given several topics from which to choose and we will go to the library for our research. This must be completed before the Winter Break---Dec.22.

Please ask to see your child's Language Arts Binder---it should be in order, with a Table of Contents and completed work pages. This organizational skill is vital to their learning the abundance of information presented to them.
