Sept.26-30----Linking Verbs and Narrative Writing

This is a busy week for us---On Monday we practiced identifying linking verbs and have a worksheet for homework. A Choice Board was introduced today from which the students must choose 3 out of 4 activities to complete by Friday. This will become their homework for the rest of the week. 

Narrative writing is beginning with the Pre Writing phase today. Students were to come to class with ideas for a personal narrative. These will be written in class and typed in the computer lab on Friday. If unfinished in the lab, the student will complete over the weekend--typed or in black/blue ink.

Reminder: Conference Week is Oct.24-28th--watch for a letter coming home soon with your date and time. If there is a particular time that you need, starting from 2:30 to 4:30 let your child's 3rd period teacher know soon.

Sept. 19-23----Verbs and The Writing Process

This week we will focus our attention on VERBS---the KING of a sentence. There are 3 types--Action, Linking, and Helping which will be put in a flip chart for easy reference. Brain Pop will help us understand these important parts of speech as we get ready to write our personal narratives.

The Writing Process is also on our radar with a Jigsaw activity in which everyone will become the expert on one section of the process and teach their part to a group of peers---that is on Wed./Thurs.  We hope to work on laptop computers also and play some Jeopardy with out new knowledge!!

Important Dates: Monday--Picture Day

                          Wednesday: Progress Reports go home and are signed by parent (in the red folder)

                          Thursday: School Dance--permission slips are required and the cost is $5 or the PTSA

                            membership card.

Sept.12-19 Language Arts

This week we will finish up with our noun study---homework on Monday is a short worksheet.

On Friday there will be an Open Note Test on DGP #1-3, so be sure and have all 3 ready to use!!

We are also focusing on fragment  and run-on sentences---identifying and correcting them in our writing. In reading we have finished The Challenge and are working on plotting the story within groups---all part of getting ready to write our own narratives. Later this week we will read a science fiction story about the planet Venus and focus on the setting of the narrative!!

Sept. 6-9th---Language Arts

This week is our 4th week of school and we are focusing on Possessive Nouns and reading another narrative by Gary Soto called "The Challenge".

Quiz on Friday over Plural and Possessive Nouns--students should refer to the many worksheets that we have completed on these nouns.

We will be comparing and contrasting the 2 narratives by Gary Soto, plotting them on a graph, and defining assorted vocabulary that will be used in summaries. Soon we will be ready to write our own personal narratives!!!
