Week of October 6, 2008

We are continuing in our efforts to improve our persuasive writing skills.  On Monday, students will organize sentence strips into paragraphs that contain related ideas to help them understand that related information is organized into paragraphs within an essay.  We will also read a short story, The Tell-Tale Heart, by Edgar Allan Poe, and the students will learn new vocabulary from this story.  A vocabulary test will be given on 10/15/08.  On Friday, we will begin to brainstorm our own ideas on a persuasive writing topic and begin writing an essay together.

Week of September 29, 2008

Students are now developing their persuasive writing skills.  They are learning the 7 methods of persuasion and analyzing well written persuasive papers.  As a class, we have written a persuasive journal pertaining to the recent gas crisis in our state, and the result was awesome!  Please ask your child at home what makes a persuasive paper convincing and how they plan to pass the Georgia Writing Assessment that will take place in January, 2009.

Weeks of September 15 and September 22

We will complete the COGAT testing during the week of September 15. In class, we will discuss the figurative language element of personification, discuss new vocabulary words, and read the short story, There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury. A comprehension quiz will be given to check your child's comprehension of the short science fiction story. Afterwards, students will write an alternate ending to the story where they will practice infusing personification into their writing. The next vocabulary test will be on Wednesday, September 24 over the following words: tremulous, paranoia, personification, oblivious, and shudder. We will complete ITBS testing the week of September 22. In class, students will take their 3rd vocabulary test on Wednesday, and then work on their alternate endings to There Will Come Soft Rains. All submitted work must include a prewrite, rough draft with proof of editing/revising, a self-editing checklist, and a final draft that will be typed in our computer lab. This will lead us into our persuasive writing unit, and the students will be asked to write a persuasive journal on whether it is a good idea for countries to develop nuclear power plants.

Week of September 8, 2008

We will be working on adding sensory details to our writing, and perfecting our abilities to recognize and write simple, compound, and complex sentences.  Students will complete a complex sentence project, where they illustrate a graphic representation of a complex sentence that the student creates.  This project will be worth a test/project grade and is due by Friday, September 12.
