December 20, 2011 7th grade

Students have completed their reading of the novel Freak the Mighty and took the open book test on the novel yesterday.  Students are currently viewing the movie version of the novel and are inventing book covers.

December 20, 2011 6th grade

Students are still working within the folklore unit and have been reading and analyzing the story Chura and Marwe from Junior Great Books. Students are working on identifying themes/universal themes and relating themes to culture and cultural values.  Today we continued with shared inquiry discussions about themes from the story and finished theme collages.

December 12, 2011 7th grade

Today in class students began their novel study "Freak the Mighty."  They completed an anticipation guide on friendship and read chapters 1-5.  Homework is to complete the "first impressions" diary entry due tomorrow.  A permission slip will be coming home soon for the movie The Mighty which is the movie adaptation of the novel.  We will be viewing the movie later next week. 

December 12, 2011 6th grade

Today in class students finished their Uncle Septimus's Beard sensory details stew mini-project that they started on Friday.  No homework.

Today in class students took the LA checkpoint test and read Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and analyzed for narrative elements.  DGP Test #2 tomorrow Friday Dec. 9th.

Today in class students took the Language Arts Checkpoint test and continued reading their folktales.

Students are working on narrative elements including characterization, point of view, and setting completing word splashes, recipes, web diagrams, and two-column notes.  DGP Test #2 is Friday December 9th and the county language arts checkpoint tests will be given tomorrow and Thursday.

Students have finished writing their narratives and are working on "Blast From The Past" a unit on myths, folk tales, legends, and tall tales.  We have worked on an anticipation guide and chart of the basics of these types of stories and just completed a semantic feature analysis where we analyzed several different stories.  Students will continue reading stories on Thursday.
