Today in class students were working on adjective and adverb phrases.  Coming of Age novels should be read by November 18.

Today in class students took the first DGP test of the year.  No homework.

Students are working on skills to prepare them for narrative writing.  We have been practicing with dialogue and types of phrases.  Today in class students played a "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" game to review the different types of phrases used in sentences.  Students should continue reading their "Coming of Age" novels and will be receiving their literature circle tasks in preparation to meet with literature circle groups on November 18th to discuss their books. Students are also journaling as they read in their books making note of questions/reactions, characterization, plot, character motive, theme, etc.  Literature circle tasks should be complete by discussion day on 11/18.

Students have been analyzing the narrative poem "The Highwayman" to bridge our poetry unit to our new unit of narrative.  Students have been working on story maps, imagery illustrations, a figurative language/imagery scavenger hunt and discussion questions to understand the poem.  Friday October 28th the students have their first DGP test of the year and should bring DGP handout materials to class to use with the test.

Today in class students worked again on I Am Poems. All parts of the I Am Poem are due tomorrow October 14th.

Today in class students continued reviewing capitalization.  I Am Poems are due on Friday October 14th.  This project is worth two test grades and points will be taken off for late projects.

Today in class students began reading the short story "The Veldt" and analyzed the story for characterization and plot.  We will continue reading on Friday.  Students are filling in a pre/during/after reading organizer to determine the message of the story and to generate questions and reactions as the story progresses.  Students should be reading "Coming of Age" themed novels for homework.

Today in class students reviewed capitalization and were given additional evaluation materials for their I Am Poems.  The poems are due on Friday October 14th.  They need to be turned that day.

Today in class students worked on "I Am Poems" that are due Friday October 14th.  All classes except third are also working on capitalization packets in preparation for the Language Arts portion of the ITBS on Tuesday.  Students should work on I Am Poems at home as well, especially sixth period.

Today in class students began working on lessons with the theme "Coming Of Age." They read a story Nadia the Willful and analyzed character traits within the story and completed a ticket out the door closure activity.  Students are reading novels with the theme "Coming of Age" over the next few weeks that they checked out from the media center.
