End of the Year

It has been my pleasure to teach each and every one of my students this year.  I hope your summer is wonderful and your freshman year of high school is fun and successful.  Please, stay in touch and stay safe!

Week of May 4th

I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful weekend.  This week we are finishing up the Benchmark assessment, which will count as a classwork grade, and we will be taking the Unit 7 Post Test.  After the post test all of my classes will be completing an activity in class for a classwork grade.  Other than these 3 grades, the only grades I will be taking are the weekly participation grades.  Those are also classwork grades.  So, no more Math 8 homework!!!!

That is it for this week.  Take care and hold on, you are about to have a "high schooler."

Week of April27th

We have survived the taking of the CRCT and most of my students are saying they are confident that they performed well on it.  I certainly hope so, we have worked very hard this year!!

This week we are reviewing Unit 7 so that we can take the Post Test.  We are also reviewing for our final Benchmark Assessment.  My plan is to take a quiz on unit 7 and the Benchmark on Thursday and Friday of this week.  Then we will take the Unit 7 Post Test Monday and Tuesday of next week, if we are able to do enough review.  If not, I will put the post test off until Thursday and Friday of that week.  Each week I am giving a participation grade, based on student engagement in class.  We also have a project that we will complete in class after we finish with Unit 7.  All these grades will have a great impact on their final average for the quarter.  Please, stress to your child that teachers are still taking grades and they cannot just stop working because the CRCT is over.

Have a wonderful week!

Week of April 15th

Welcome back from Spring Break.  I hope everyone is well rested.  Here at Daniell we are on our final countdown to the CRCT.  In class we will be discussing 2 new concepts from unit 7 and reviewing for the CRCT next week.  I will not be assigning homework, this week or next week.  As a matter of fact the only grade I will be taking this week is a participation grade for their efforts in class during our review activities.  Please, discuss with your student the importance of taking the CRCT seriously.  They need to eat a nutritious breakfast, get plenty of rest and come with a positive attitude on each testing day.  We would also like them to be sure and leave their cell phones turned off and in their lockers.  Any interuption, including cell phones, is treated very seriouly and is reported and investigated.  Therefore, please help us avoid this by reminding them not to bring their phones into class.

After all testing is done, we will revisit unit 7 and take a quiz and the post test over the information.  When that is completed we will spend the rest of the school year reviewing the curriculum and other basic skills so that they will have the best possible chance for success in their Math I class next year.

Week of March 23rd

We are officially starting our last unit of study this week.  Students will be learning how to solve systems of equations and inequalities.  This week our emphasis is on equations.  Each night there will be a handout for homework.  The first is on solving systems by graphing, the second is about solving systems by substitution and the 3rd covers solving by elimination.  We will have a short quiz over all this next Monday, March 30th.  Our textbook does not do an adequate job of covering all the students need to know.  Therefore, it is important that students be in class everyday to take notes from the Powerpoint presentations that I am using from the Algebra I book.

Week of March 16th

This week is going to be very busy as we finish Unit 6 and begin Unit 7.  On Monday and Tuesday we are working with parallel lines cut by 2 or more transversals and with slope relationships of parallel and perpendicular lines.  The homework which is due Wednesday is the Unit 6 Study Guide.  We will go over the guide and complete extra practice on Wednesday.  Then on Thursday and Friday we will take the unit test at the beginning of class.  Afterward we will begin Unit 7 by graphing systems of equations on the TI-82 calculators and then solve systems by using substitution.  At this time I do not plan on assigning weekend homework, since I do not know how far we will get with substitution.

Remember there will be a help session this
Thursday at 8:15.

Have a good week.

Week of March 9th

This week we are studying angle relationships and proportional relationships with parallel lines.  The assignment for Monday and Tuesday was page 332, 7-20 and will be graded.  The assignment for Wednesday is to study for a quiz covering vocabulary and section 7-2 in the textbook.  This quiz will be counted with the 4th quarter grades.  On Wednesday I will introduce proportional relationships in lines cut by parallel lines.  The assignment will be a handout and I will also give a grade on it.  At present I have no plans for weekend homework.

Week of March 3rd

This week has been a week of tying up loose ends with Unit 5 and getting started in our new Unit.  I gave a quiz on graphing inequalities that I have not graded yet.  As soon as they are graded I will post them on I Parent.  Our new unit is named Congruence and we are studying angle relationships and the relationship of the slopes of parallel lines and of perpendicular lines.  This will be a welcome break from all the algebra that we have been doing.  However, I hope to finish this new unit in 2 weeks so that we have time to cover our final unit before Spring Break.  That will give us a week to spend on CRCT review.

Speaking of CRCT review, I hope that your children are taking advantage of the online assessment review that is available to them.  A handout with log on information was handed out with progress reports.

There is no homework for my classes over the weekend.  However, next week they will have homework each day that they have math class.  There will also be a quiz on angle relationships and some vocabulary on Wednesday, March 12th, if things go as planned.

The Week of February 23rd

It is hard to believe that we are already in the last week of February.  So far this week there has been no homework.  We have been finishing up a test on slope.  It will take me a while to get them graded, but when I do I will again post grades to I-Parent.

On Wednesday the assignment for all students will be a 2 page handout on graphing inequalities.  We will check that and take our February Benchmark test on Friday.  After the test I will begin "line of best fit" for scatter plots.  I am planning on assigning Practice Workbook page 95.

Next week we will finish Unit 5 with a quiz and begin Unit 6 on angle relationships. We should be able to move through this unit at a much quicker pace than we have the algebra unit.

The week of February 16th

Hello Everyone!  I hope you have had a restful 3-day weekend.  This week we will finally finish our study of section 12-3 in the textbook on slope.  Tuesday and Wednesday we will be reviewing and preparing for the test over sections 12-1, 12-2 and 12-3.  The only assignment is to study, study and study!!!  The test is Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday and Friday, after the test, we will begin learning how to graph linear inequalities.  This is from section 12-6 in our book.  The homework is page 758, 8 -14.

We are also going to be reviewing for our February Benchmark test.  This review will be in the form of classroom warm-ups.  The benchmark will cover everything in units 1-4 and will be given on February 26th and 27th.  I plan to use this as a grade in the classwork category.

Along with progress reports on Tuesday, you will receive a log in for your student so that he or she can review and practice for the CRCT at home.  I strongly suggest that you take advantage of this.  Everything that we hear about the 8th grade math test is that it is very rigorous.  We are doing everything we can to insure that your child is successful in passing this test.  However, the extra effort at home will certainly help us in this endeavor.

Lastly, I sent home detailed progress reports last week with my students.  If you have not seen it yet, please ask your child for it.  It explains how the average on the Tuesday progress report came about.

Have a wonderful week and feel free to contact me with any concerns.
